As the leaves change, your lawn is entering one of the most important times of the year. Fall is make-or-break season in Michigan — what you do now will set the stage for next spring’s success.
🍂 1. Keep Mowing
Don’t stop too early! Keep mowing your lawn until it stops growing — usually late October or early November. Drop your mower blade to about 2.5 inches on the final mow to prevent snow mold.
🌬️ 2. Rake or Mulch Leaves
Leaves left on the lawn block sunlight and invite fungus. Either rake them or mulch them finely into the lawn to add organic matter.
🌱 3. Aerate & Overseed
Aeration breaks up compacted soil and allows air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots. Overseeding afterward fills in bare patches and thickens the turf. This combo is a game-changer for Oakland County lawns.
💧 4. Water Weekly (Yes, Even in Fall)
Grass still needs about 1 inch of water per week. If it’s not raining, give your lawn a deep watering until the ground starts freezing.
