If you think mowing is just about keeping the grass short, think again. How you mow directly affects the health, color, and density of your lawn. Here’s how to mow your yard like a pro — and keep it thriving between Ley’s Lawn Care visits.

✅ 1. Don’t Cut Too Short

The #1 mistake we see? Cutting too low. For most Michigan lawns (like Kentucky Bluegrass or Fescue), keep it between 3 and 3.5 inches. This helps shade out weeds, retain moisture, and strengthen roots.

✅ 2. Keep Your Blade Sharp

A dull blade rips the grass, leaving ragged edges that brown and invite disease. Sharpen your mower blade every 20–25 hours of use, or once per season minimum.

✅ 3. Alternate Your Pattern

Avoid mowing in the same direction each time. Switching up your pattern helps the grass grow upright and prevents ruts or compaction.

✅ 4. Mow When It’s Dry

Wet grass clumps and smothers itself. Try to mow in the late morning or early evening when the grass is dry but not stressed.

✅ 5. Don’t Bag It (Most of the Time)

Grass clippings are full of nutrients. If you mow often enough, you can leave them to decompose naturally — it’s called grasscycling.
