Summer in Michigan can be brutal on your lawn. Between the heat, drought, and foot traffic, your yard might start to show signs of stress. But don’t worry — here’s how to help your grass survive (and even thrive) between Ley’s visits.
☀️ 1. Water Deeply, Not Often
Water 1–2 times per week, but water deeply — about 30–40 minutes per zone. Shallow watering promotes weak roots. Aim for 1″ of water per week.
☀️ 2. Mow High, Mow Less
Raise your mowing height to 3.5–4 inches during summer. Taller grass shades the soil and prevents burnout.
☀️ 3. Spot-Treat Weeds
Pull or spot-spray weeds instead of blanket treating. Broadleaf weeds are most vulnerable in spring/fall — avoid stressing your lawn further with summer herbicides.
☀️ 4. Avoid Fertilizing During Drought
Too much nitrogen in the heat can burn your lawn. Let us handle the fertilizing on a proper schedule — usually in early summer and early fall.
Bonus Tip: Try not to mow during the hottest part of the day. Early morning or evening is best.
